The Haunting of the Liberty Memorial Building

Located in the capital city of Bismarck in North Dakota, the Liberty Memorial Building was built in the early 1800s originally to serve as the state library and home to various government offices including the state Supreme Court.

For years, employees working within the old building have reported bizarre happenings and paranormal experiences.  In fact, several of them ended up leaving their jobs out of fear after experiencing such hauntings.  As a result, the Liberty Memorial Building has become known as one of the most haunted places in all of North Dakota.

During the 1970s, one of the employees who worked for the Historical Society in the building was working late one evening and had brought his dog along to keep him company.  Suddenly, the dog began to growl viciously and bare its teeth.  It took off running down the hall towards the basement area.  Before the man had the chance to follow the dog down there, it returned whimpering with its tail between its leg.  The employee also claims on a different occasion while working alone late, he was riding the elevator down to the basement when he saw an unfamiliar man enter one of the storage rooms.  The employee followed him into the room only to discover that no one was in there, even though there was only one way to get in and out.

Other employees have claimed to hear voices in the basement or being over come with the feeling that someone was watching them even though they were alone.  Some reports (most dated during the 1970s which is considered to be a time when the building had its highest reported rate of paranormal activity) include employees hearing slamming doors, disembodied whispering and coughing, and flickering lights.

While there have been no recent reports of hauntings in the Liberty Memorial Building, many still believe someone – or something – still lingers throughout the old, historic building.
