200 years ago, a woman named Mary, moved to the quiet countryside, near Deer Creek with her husband, a farmer named Topher, and their 5 kids. According to legend, the crops they labored over were inedible, and their bellies ached for food. Their only comfort was Mary’s sweet lullabies, a reminder of happier times. As time went painstakingly on, and the hunger became unbearable, Mary asked her oldest daughter, Beth, to go on a walk with her in the woods. After several hours, they sat down to rest, Beth closed her eyes as her mother hummed her favorite lullaby. In that moment, Mary slit Beth’s throat, and butchered her body for meat, hiding her remains amongst the trees. She hurried home to prepare a feast for her remaining family, explaining that she had made an arrangement with the town’s butcher for Beth’s hand in marriage. All approved the match, and ate ravenously. But hunger can only be quieted for a spell, then it returns, worse than before.
Over the next several months, her children begged her to make more deals with the butcher, and one by one, she brought them into woods to meet their unmerciful end. Her once sweet lullabies degraded into a terribly dark hymn. When hunger flared a final time, Topher insisted that the butcher must have some use for their youngest, a skinny lad named Zee. But when the time came for Mary to take Zee, Topher changed his mind and followed them into the woods. He followed his wife’s hymn as it wafted through the trees, and discovered her in a small clearing, crouched over their son’s body, almost lovingly carving the meat from his bones. Stumbling backwards in fright and realization, the two made eye contact. Mary smiled at her husband, and he turned and ran. That evening, Topher the farmer, penned a note with his story and hung himself in the woods. Mary disappeared into the forest, never to be seen again.
It’s said that you can still hear her lullabies in the wind, and that Mary’s spirit has continued to lurk in the forest awaiting the opportunity to possess someone, so that she can kill again. Alas, our story does not end here. For as long as anyone can remember, these woods have been marked by disappearances and gruesome findings. Don’t believe us? See the incident reports for yourself. For the first time in years, the newly dubbed, Valley of the Haunted, will allow the public to enter the grounds at their own risk… Do you dare to enter the trail?
